Samples are reputed to be abundant and generously dispensed, more so, as the afternoon wears on and the samples of wine have taken effect upon the dispensers of the samples of chocolate. Good times! The 3rd annual San Francisco Chocolate Salon also promises to be about 70% female in its attendees (according to sources close to the event). So, any single fellas not yet swayed by the chocolate, should come for that which the chocolate attracts. http://sfchocolatesalon.eventbrite.com

I can’t remember the last time I saw a “Save the Whales” bumper sticker. Our collective attention may drift to other causes and other issues, but there can be little doubt that the fate of the earth’s largest mammals remains dubious. Now in its 11th year, the American Cetacean Society’s international conference “Whales in a Changing World” offers answers and a look at how whales, dolphins and porpoises are faring in these uncertain environmental times. Scheduled for November 13th to the 16th, the conference encompasses multiple activities including a whale watching cruise in Monterey Bay and a symposium featuring some of the world’s foremost marine biologists and whale experts. In their own words: “American Cetacean Society conferences have a long tradition of presenting the latest findings and news about whales and other marine life. We also work to promote discussion and thought about the role and conservation of whales in an ever-changing world, and leave attendees motivated to work together for the good of the whales. American Cetacean Society conferences are open to everyone – you don’t need to be ‘in the field’ to participate. So come, be energized and enlightened.” Recommended.

These days it seems that every Joe with a Meetup following is trying to pull-off a tech conference of some sort or other. And if anybody knows how many Joes there are in the world these days, it’s Eventbrite. Hehe. But noise and rabid entrepreneurship in the space notwithstanding, it’s clear that there are only a few truly important tech conferences that one should really make an effort to attend. Why are they important?

1. Because they convene the most influential people to our business and technological lives

2. Because they try to bring interesting new companies to light, and occasionally succeed

By that measure, one of the most important tech conferences of the year is certain to be TechCrunch50. A sure sign of its importance (not to mention its success) is the fact that it is now impossible for anyone who does not already have a ticket to attend. TechCrunch50 is oversold. I convey this with some self-interest, since I’ll be working the door on Monday and do not wish to play bouncer to too many of you, lol. Actually, that isn’t exactly true. I hear there’s a waiting list now, but the mechanics through which anyone will be selected that way are anybody’s guess.

But seriously, I deliberately plagiarized the title of this page, published so many months ago, to call attention to the fact that promotional hyperbole has come to pass. TechCrunch50 is very likely going to be better than TechCrunch40. To list just a few reasons:

The one-on-one interview with Peter Thiel

The Parties

The Panels

A provocative theme

If it weren’t so cruel to do so, I would say DO EVERYTHING IN YOUR POWER TO ATTEND TECHCRUNCH50.

One of the more interesting events to skitter across the Eventbrite radar screen in a few days is FlavorTripping. In their own words: “Flavor Tripping is an ongoing series of Bacchanalian food tasting smackdowns that occur about once a month, beginning in February ‘08 in NYC and SF. Our events are smallish affairs held in an undisclosed location [...] The first series of tastings center on miracle fruit — a cranberry-sized West African berry that that numbs your sour and bitter tastebuds for a couple of hours after eating it. That means that everything that used to taste sour now tastes sweet. Fo’ reals. It’s like a candy Willy Wonka would have invented – after eating one stout beers taste like chocolate milkshakes, grapefruits taste like pixie sticks, cheeses taste like frosting, it will make even the crappiest tequila taste like lemonade.” Right on.

San Francisco plays host to some of the most innovative and culturally progressive outdoor events on earth. In keeping with that tradition, NewTeeVee has been recently responsible for projecting grainy, Youtube-quality videos on enormous outdoor screens near the city’s piers. In their own words: “The Pier Screenings, a series of four summer events, bring together content creators and online video aficionados in a casual setting. These events are live tests of how well online video survives the move from the PC to the gigantic screen, accompanied by entertaining commentary from our judges and informative talks by relevant, successful online video entrepreneurs. Past themes included episodic content, parody, product placement and user-generated advertising, and citizen news.” This Thursday is the last event in San Francisco for the Summer, until the series returns (by way of LA and NY) in October. Don’t miss this opportunity to be a part of a cool experiment at the intersection of mass-audience experience and personal digital video. The topic for this Thursday’s screening is Pilots: “Please send us the first episode of your online show, whether it’s been picked up or not, and our panel of judges and live audience will vote on whether they’d like to keep watching. We welcome all genres of shows.” So, check out NewTeeVee on Thursday night. I’ll be there.
