DFW weekend events: Longer days = cooler nights

Tarell BrownSomeone once told me that DFW gets about two weeks of Spring before it turns into one of the hottest places on the planet.  You’re probably looking for some great things to do that don’t involve being outside for exceptionally long periods of time.  Well, you’re in luck.  There’s lots going on this weekend in the Big D and with the days longer than ever before (thank you summer solstice), you have plenty of time to enjoy as much of the fun as you can fit in.

Let’s start with a little sports.  Now, you might be on a little bit of sports overload with the World Cup, but let’s be honest- one more can’t hurt.  Tarell Brown’s celebrity basketball tournament is bound to be a star-studded affair and who’s going to say no to hanging out with a bunch of celebrities?  Tarell brings friends like Aaron Ross, Michael Griffin, and Dallas’ own Allen Rossum trading in the turf for the hardwood.  Tickets are $8 and the event benefits Brown’s charitable organization.

If sports aren’t your thing, check out world-renowned Russian piano virtuoso Dimitri Ratser at a free performance at Steinway Hall off Central Expressway.  Ratser will be performing selected works by Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff.  Though the event is free, seating is limited so make sure to RSVP.

Saturday continues our celebration of the arts and a little inspiration for the writer in you.  The Fourth Annual Do the Write Thing conference is “is designed to assist those who are interested in being successful published authors.” This year’s focus will be on the dollars and sense (cents) of publishing and will feature several best selling authors.

summer heat

Tired yet?  Didn’t think so.  Rounding out this weekend is Sunday’s Summer Heat Runway Show at Deux Lounge in Mockingbird Station.  Everyone knows that Dallas continues to set fashion trends and Sunday will feature the best in summer fashion.  Mix in live music, food, drinks and an amazing atmosphere, and I can think of no better way to start off your week.

So, there it is- a weekend full of activities designed to keep you cool.  Hope you’re having an amazing week- make it awesome!

By the by, it’s probably a good idea for me to introduce myself.  My name is Damany Daniel and I’m the new Event Evangelist for DFW.  What’s that mean?  It means I go to events, I host events, and I am all about town seeing and highlighting what makes the Big D awesome.  If you see me, make sure you say hi! And check me out on Twitter and Facebook.
