I have a confession: I’m not a fan of facial hair… and that’s definitely an understatement. I’ve never grown a beard or mustache, and I even tend to keep my sideburns pretty trim. Personal grooming habits aside, there is one month a year when my view of facial hair flips on it’s head – Movember!
Movember, formerly known as November, is the movement responsible for the increase in upper lip fuzz that you commonly see around this time. During the month, men will grow out a mustache to raise awareness and funds for Men’s health issues. Since it’s humble beginnings in Melbourne, Australia – Movember has grown to a worldwide phenomenon. In 2011, there were over 850,000 registered participants that raised over $125,000,000 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation and other causes that promote Men’s health!
With so many people coming together to raise funds and awareness for Men’s health issues, I’m excited to support Movember’s efforts from multiple angles in 2012!
- First, we noticed that a lot of Mo Bros and Mo Sistas (these are the proper term for Movember participants) were already using Eventbrite to support the cause in 2011. So, we designed a custom theme that can be used by anyone throwing an event in support of Movember.
- Second, we’re helping Movember gather insights into the Mo community by aggregating event data, to make sure all public Movember events will be listed on the Movember calendar. If you’re just looking to attend a Mo Party, the Movember calendar will always be up to date!
- Third, Eventbrite has fielded a squad of Mo Bros and Mo Sistas to help raise money and spread awareness. Which, of course, includes my very first attempt at growing facial hair.
