Microsoft recently announced the launch of a new program called BizSpark to encourage startups to build on their stack. You get everything you need to build a web service free for three years. Not surprisingly, many of the tools and software you get compete with open source alternatives, such as MySQL. The program, run by VP of Strategic and Emerging Business Development Dan’l Lewin, is global and offers access to full-featured development tools and production licenses of server products with no upfront costs. BizSpark also provides the necessary hand holding with free technical support.
Interested in pitching? You’ll get your chance. In what looks to be the beginnings of a national BizSpark roadshow, Microsoft is hosting a number of events where startups will be given a chance to make their pitch in a rapid-fire presentation format: 20 slides, 20 seconds per slide. Geez. Under the auspices of Microsoft Startup Zone, a handful of Texas companies will be getting their shot tomorrow night in Austin. Similar events in the Bay Area and Los Angeles are tentatively scheduled for December.
