My Next Class: Making Money for Your Business Using Social Media June 27, 2012

You should come to my class if you: know that social media is a great tool for your business, but feel overwhelmed by it. If you want to take your social media presence to the next level, but don’t know how to tell if you’re being successful, then this is the class for you.

My inspiration for hosting classes is: sharing what I have learned with other entrepreneurs. Being an entrepreneur is a tough job and we can make it so much easier for one another if we collectively leverage our resources.

The best class I ever attended was: a class on project management. It was the perfect blend of interactivity, group work and lecture, and I learned a ton. We had notes to reflect on and the energy in the room was great!

My advice for first-time teachers is: to do everything you can to keep things simple. When you are an expert, the hardest thing to do is to keep everything basic enough that you don’t lose people. You need to start simple and take people deeper WITH you – not have them chasing AFTER you.

The one thing I can’t live without is: technology! iPhone, iPad, laptop – couldn’t live without it.

My worst teaching experience was: the first time I ever taught a class. I didn’t know what I was doing and I was terrified. I kept picturing a heckler who was going to ask questions I didn’t know the answer to, and so I kept forgetting the direction I was headed and was incredibly lost. Thankfully, I’ve learned that it’s okay to not have all the answers – and that has made teaching such a better experience!

The most memorable student I ever had in my class was: the student who came to my class knowing that she wanted to teach it. She kept interjecting questions and trying to take it deeper than it was meant to go. It was a great experience to learn how to manage multiple skill levels in a room without losing some and boring others.

What was the profession you imagined for yourself when you were twenty? I really thought I was going to be a mental health counselor. I was studying psychology in college and focused on graduating, getting an internship and a masters degree and then helping people from all walks of life find (or re-find) meaning.

I love teaching classes because: it’s a great way to continually hear the perspectives of people who are new to social media. They have great insight and questions and it helps to keep me grounded. I also love sharing knowledge – learning from others and sharing what I have learned.
