We first met Kalen Gallagher last year as he was rolling out his campaign to serve on the school board in San Jose, CA. Looking for an easy to use, but powerful fundraising event platform to organize his fundraisers, Kalen turned to Eventbrite.
In November, Kalen pulled off a huge win, unseating two incumbent candidates and pulling in the majority of votes in the four person race. We caught up with Kalen to learn more about why he was running and to learn more about his campaign.
Why did you decide to run for office? I decided to run for a seat on the Campbell Union High School District (CUHSD) Board to implement programs that seriously address our district’s 15 percent dropout rate, raise the low achievement scores that place us among the lowest in the state when compared to similar schools, and ensure the our teachers and staff have the tools and community support they need to succeed.
As a former teacher and as an alumni of one of our district’s 6 high schools, I know that we can, and must, do better.I am also incredibly passionate about expanding the use of cutting-edge technology to enhance learning, and give district teachers the classroom resources necessary to get the fullest results. I believe my background in law, education, and current position at an innovative education startup will be a welcome perspective on the board.
Tell us about your school district. The Campbell Union High School District serves the communities of West San Jose, Campbell, and parts of Saratoga, Los Gatos, and Santa Clara. Our schools serves around 7800 students.
How did Eventbrite empower you to run a better campaign? Eventbrite made setting up my fundraising events a very simple process. You can have a professional looking page up and running in minutes and don’t have to deal with the outdated software that’s been used by campaigns for years.
What features do you like the most? I love that Eventbrite is viral by nature, so when a supporter purchases a ticket to a fundraiser, it’s simple for them to share the event with their friends who may also be interested in attending. I also enjoy that I can use Eventbrite’s discount code system to create special ticket prices for certain groups. For example, at my kickoff event I created a special code for my former students that allowed them to get free tickets for them and their families.
How did you find out about Eventbrite? One of my good friends from college, Brianna Haag, joined Eventbrite after college and she tweets about it a lot!
Who inspired your campaign? The biggest inspiration for me has always been my former students. Watching them grow has been one of the great joys of my life and a constant reminder of the power of an effective, goal-driven public education.
And finally, our most official question. Drumroll please! What’s your desert island album? Smashing Pumpkins, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
