Gear Up for the Next Campaign Cycle!

Now that President Obama has been inaugurated to serve a second term, it is time to gear up for the next campaign cycle!

The upcoming State of the Union (SOTU) address provides a great opportunity to jumpstart your organizing and fundraising efforts for whatever campaign you’re working on in 2013. Regardless of which political camp you’re in, a “SOTU” watch party is a great way to rally your team and gear up for the work ahead.

And since your Eventbrite registration page can be set up in minutes, there is plenty of time to get your event up and running. Here are our tips for making it a hit:

1. Make it Shine! Spice up your event page with colors, logos, and pictures. If you’re rooting for a political party, candidate, or recently-elected official, be sure to use the candidate’s campaign logo or your party’s go-to color scheme’  And you don’t have to be an expert at HTML – check out this blog post for tips on designing a stand out page.

2. Appoint Co-hosts. To make sure your party is packed, invite the politically-minded networkers in your community to co-host the event with you. Be sure to include their name on the event page and thank them at the event. Most co-hosts will be happy to help you in exchange for some public appreciation.

3. Collect Data from Your Attendees. Your watch party is a terrific opportunity to recruit volunteers for the work ahead. With Eventbrite, you can follow up with your attendees for future volunteer opportunities by collecting their contact information when they register to attend. 4. Get Creative! Put the “fun” back in fundraising. Maybe that means encouraging all of your attendees to wear a certain color – maybe red, blue, or green to match your party of choice! Or, incorporate a game like political trivia and gin up a little pre-SOTU energy. Award the winners with something fun.

5. Jump Start the Conversation. If you are planning a watch party, consider using the opportunity to not only discuss national issues, but also what’s on everyone’s mind when it comes to local politics. Encourage guests to share which issue they care about most (either aloud or on a bulletin board) OR invite an elected official to share a few thoughts.

After every election cycle, campaign organizers and political parties work hard to keep the energy alive as they move into an “off year.” But the secret is simple: bring people together, and do it now. It’s the easiest way to keep the conversation going and the momentum moving through the next cycle.
