Today’s guest post comes from the ladies behind Tartan & Sequins, the life and style blog/love child of two California girls who share a passion for all things preppy and fabulous. They navigate party planning, style their bad selves, play beauty parlor, and share their latest obsessions.
They met in their golden undergrad years at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio – now grown ladies and based on the West Coast, they love finding new and fresh ways to put a California spin on their undergraduate degrees in Prep.
Bonjour, party people! We’re Allison and Julia from the fashion/lifestyle blog Tartan & Sequins, and we’re stopping by Eventbrite to show you to how T&S does New Year’s Eve. When it comes to soirees, we pride ourselves on thinking outside the box (you know, the box in this case being your typical $200 ticket which allows you the glory of one sub-par passed crostini and all the André you can drink). Have you ever looked up at the night sky while desperately trying to locate a cab after the ball drops and thought “there HAS to be a better way?” Don’t fret, pets. We’re here to show you how to plan a fab New Year’s rager that will have your friends hugging you a little too hard at the end of the night.
After much discussion, and repeat viewings of the Great Gatsby trailer, we decided that a roaring twenties party was the only way to go. I mean, the sequins, the feathers, the pearls!? It’s all so very.
First things first – what would we wear to host a fab roaring twenties New Year’s Eve bash? Check it – the option below is a subtle nod to the twenties without going full-on flapper, and the pieces we used can be mixed into other outfits with incredible ease. Tip: have a makeup artist at Sephora apply your false lashes for you on the day of the event!
Julie Collection Capri Earrings, Sephora Cabaret False Lashes, Nars Lipgloss in Orgasm, Anthropologie Sheer Swiss Dotted Tights, Sparkly Silver Booties, Tracy Reese Fete Noticed Dress, Julie Collection Silver Bali Bracelet, NARS Nail Polish in Candy Darling, Pieces Silver Sequin Clutch
Now that we’re dressed, made-up, and looking fly, let’s chat about the party itself. Clearly, we absolutely love the rich, opulent colors of the 1920’s, so it should be no surprise that we’d also decorate for our party accordingly. Lots of blacks, gold, and silvers of course. Maybe even some crystal and feathers? I know, we’re outrageous. The thing to keep in mind about decorating for a party like this is that it doesn’t have to be expensive. You probably already have several items already in your home that would work great if just mixed in with a couple of new pieces.
For example, do you have some empty vases? Fill them with crystals or feathers and place them around your home. Have a buffet or side table in your living room? Pick up an opulent tray like one of the options below and set up a bar with period-aprops cocktails (we’ll chat about our favorites in a minute). Another easy decor option would be to places candles all over your home in groups atop glitzy chargers you probably already have to set the mood. We’ve included some of our favorites below.
As we just mentioned, specialty cocktails are the way to go for events like these. Of course, you will serve champagne and your friends will all be polite and bring some wine (hint hint), but we think it’s always nice to have a couple of mixed drink options on hand. Keeping with the roaring twenties theme, our favorite prohibition-era libations are the Hemingway Daiquiri and the Gin Basil Smash, and our gentlemen friends always love a good Manhattan or Sidecar.
We hope you have an absolutely fabulous New Year’s Eve!
Yours in roaring twenties glam,
