Eventbrite plugs into Wordpress to enable ticket sales

Answering to popular demand, the talented team at Shane and Peter just released an open source Wordpress plugin for Eventbrite so now Wordpress users around the world can sell tickets and register attendees right from their blog. The plugin has two parts: The Events Calendar which enables you to rapidly create and manage events using the post editor. Features include Google Maps integration as well as default templates such as a calendar grid and event list for streamlined one click installation. The second part is the Eventbrite for Events Calendar plugin that brings you Eventbrite functionality right into Wordpress, enabling you to sell tickets and collect registrations for your event. Both plugins need to be activated in order for the Eventbrite functionality to work.

You’ll need an Eventbrite account to use the plugin, so if you don’t already have one, sign up here.

Eventbrite supports Haiti relief events

Last week a devastating earthquake struck Haiti’s capital city of Port-Au-Prince. Today, rescue workers are still pulling people from the rubble and aid is urgently needed to get the food, water, medicine, and security to a country in need. Around the world, dedicated and passionate individuals and organizations are gathering people together to raise money for this urgent cause.

Eventbrite is waiving fees for all non-profit organizations who are throwing events to raise money for aid efforts in Haiti as our way of showing solidarity and support in this time of need. By coming together event organizers and attendees can impact positive change and inspire others to participate.

Mike Kim who is organizing a benefit event in San Francisco with Glide told us, “When people come together to support a cause through an event, they are subjected to a new view, a new emotion, and a refreshed drive to continue the fight to raise awareness or funds.” At Eventbrite we believe in the power of events and are committed to helping our event holders support this important cause.

If you are a non-profit organization putting on a relief event, please submit your event so we can waive your fees by applying to our non-profit program, Eventbrite for Causes.

We encourage anyone to support the relief efforts in Haiti by donating to the Red Cross, Oxfam, or any other charitable organization that is mobilized to assist the Haitian people. Google has also put together a list of organizations that need support.

While Eventbrite powers events around the world, there is a powerful force behind Eventbrite, and she is Julia Hartz. As our co-founder and president this shrewd blond has been driving the vision and strategy of Eventbrite since the very beginning. We could gush about her stunning intellect, leadership abilities, magnetic personality, and entrepreneurial savvy, but suffice it to say that she she brings a passion for our business that is contagious and has that je ne sais quoi that inspires us all to do better than we ever thought we could.

So raise a glass to our fearless leader and please vote for Eventbrite in the Girls In Tech Catalyst Competition on Vator.tv, a competition that awards recognition to women-led start-ups. Kicking Off the Decade: New Year’s Day Events Nationwide

With all the buzz (ahem) surrounding New Year’s Eve, it’s easy to forget that the sun also rises on New Year’s Day. But coast to coast, great events are coming on Jan. 1 too, and from dawn dance parties to mellow evening lounge sessions, Eventbrite has them covered. Here’s a cross-section of some of our most enticing New Year’s Day happenings. Because the first day of the decade deserves to get some love.

Philadelphia: In Philly, it’s an after-party for the day after: Go hear Trey Songz sing, then cap off the evening by hanging out with the man himself. La Invencion: The Official Invention of Sex Tour After Party features enough DJs, bottles, and star power that it practically counts as the main event.

San Francisco: Whether it’s your first stop or your last, the 6 A.M.-till-forever bayside groovefest Breakfast of Champions owns its time slot, and takes out a mortgage on your dancing shoes. Featuring DJs galore, and at just $10, about the best deal in town.

Atlanta: Let’s just say the good folks at First Night Atlanta have a keen sense of New Year’s irony. The aptly named A Blackout Affair–they’re referring to your duds, not your drinks–is a sleek event that’s free with a VIP ticket from the night before, and a deal even without.

Detroit: No New Year’s Day event list would be complete without at least one nod to resolutions. Starting just 30 minutes into the new year, Detroit’s 2010 Introduction praise bash bills itself as a place to “get drunk in God, not alcohol.” The DJs still come full-strength.

Boston: Some cities would tell you to take a quiet New Year’s nap. But Boston is a town served by the pint, and the Old Boston Tours Pub Crawl is all about hair of the dog–the very, very old dog. Tour some of the city’s most storied old drinking landmarks and convince yourself you’re doing it for the history.

What is Eventbrite Town Hall?

Eventbrite Town Hall is a place where we can gather with our customers to share a brief update on what we’ve been working on and then answer questions and discuss any issues that you want to talk about. It’s all the fun that a public company gets with an investor call, but since we’re not public we get to meet with you, our wonderfully *brite* customers instead. It will be an open forum featuring you and our founder and president, Julia Hartz.

We will limit it to 25 attendees so that we can have a good discussion with an intimate group.

Putting the social back in social media

With all the ways to connect digitally these days and the explosion of social media sites like Facebook, Ning and Twitter, we’ve increasingly heard the question “do you think events are dying?” The hypothesis here is that people are meeting online, so they no longer need to meet in person. We see quite the opposite. The number of events hosted on Eventbrite are increasing rapidly and the scope and themes of the events are exploding at a mind-blowing rate. We are constantly discovering new and interesting events around wonderfully obscure topics. It’s the long tail theory applied to events. But the difference between events and music/book/movies is that events needed more than the internet for the long tail to be realized, they needed social media.

I believe that social media is actually the catalyst to more live events not less.

Before social media if you were into nude yoga in Austin, or concerned about breast cancer awareness in Philly, or an entrepreneur in Leeds, or a transitioning professional in Albuquerque , or liked to drive your Audi crazy fast in Lakewood, CO, it was difficult, if not impossible to find many others like yourself. But this is precisely what social media is good for. It enables individuals to connect with other like-minded individuals who share a particular passion or point of view. It fosters sharing of information and allows it to travel at lightning speed, reaching the people who care about it most. I love the illustration here on this post, our kick-ass designer, Ryan Bailey, created it to illustrate the explosive power of social media and how one person can instantaneously be connected to others through the social graph.

The implications of this new way of connecting and communicating are wide reaching and few individuals or companies will escape its impact. But my purpose here is to talk about events. Now that people are finding each other more easily and connecting around subjects that they are passionate about, the next step is gathering together in person to share these experiences. We are not content to merely connect in the digital world, a ☺ is no substitution for the real thing, so people are gathering. Now, more than ever, they are finding each other and then meeting over breakfast or creating conferences, exchanging real handshakes experiencing the magic and excitement of events.
