It’s not a secret that we’re big fans of the live event at Eventbrite. Getting together around live music is undoubtedly one of our favorite past times, which is why we were so excited to work with one of the most celebrated music venues in Chicago, Lincoln Hall. Lincoln Hall was founded in 2009 by Chris and Mike Schuba and has a short, but rich history of hosting some of the world’s top independent musicians. But, like many music venues, Lincoln Hall’s backstage area needed a little lovin’.
The green room, or backstage area, of most live music venues are notorious for being dark, dingy and having an array of rude images and scrawled text on the walls. We worked with Design Cloud, Mackenzie Madsen Design and Lincoln Hall to completely reimagine the backstage experience for visiting artists and create a space that would allow them to completely refresh and reconnect before rocking out.
The overall design of the reimagined green room is modern, clean, and comfortable. It was clear in the beginning that all additions needed to be sturdy and indestructible (read: indestructible). We knew that most artists would be coming off long drives or flights and would need a space to regroup and refresh once they arrived. As such, we incorporated ample areas for musicians to store their luggage, hang their clothes, and stash their belongings. We installed a floating sofa with a custom concrete base to lend more seating and make better use of the room’s angles. A vanity and backlit mirror was installed to allow for additional primping before artists go on stage. A recessed, dimmable light installation became the main focal point of the lounge area.
Once refreshed and settled, artists need to reconnect and recharge. Additional outlets and charging stations were added throughout the entire space and two flat screen TVs were installed, which stream the venue’s front of house (+ Apple TV for a little Netflix fix!)
Because we all know that a good party starts and ends with everyone at the kitchen counter, a custom steel counter bar was installed under a drum cymbal light fixture with a bar cart to house those imminent backstage libations. And since it wouldn’t really be a green room without random images and text from bands who are passing through, the entire bathroom was transformed into a chalkboard graffiti wall to give artists a designated place to leave their marks.
Artists such as The Jezabels, Jungle, The Felice Brothers, and The Antlers have already inhabited the newly revived backstage area at Lincoln Hall.
“I can’t express how positively overwhelmed we are with the turnout of the Backstage Revival project. We weren’t aware at how much could be done with a space of that size. What the team at Eventbrite and the designers did was amazing. We are happy that each and every band and event coming through our doors now has a place to relax and prepare for their night in style and comfort.” – Michael Schuba, Lincoln Hall
“I want the space to leave an impression on the musicians and for them to create their own memorable experiences backstage. I want them to feel great in the space, take that energy and share it with their audiences. ” – Mackenzie Madsen, Mackenzie Madsen Design
